NORCET Exam Pattern and Syllabus – Complete Guide for Nursing Students
The AIIMS NORCET is one of the most important examinations for nursing students who want to secure a government job in AIIMS hospitals. Many students prepare hard but still feel confused about the exact syllabus and weightage of subjects.
In this article, I will explain the complete exam pattern, subject distribution, and latest trends in a simple and clear way so that you can plan your preparation properly.
AIIMS NORCET Exam Structure
The NORCET exam is conducted in two stages:
- Prelims (Stage 1)
- Mains (Stage 2)
Only those students who qualify the prelims exam are eligible to appear for the mains examination.
NORCET Prelims Exam Pattern
The prelims exam norcet syllabus is designed to test your speed, accuracy, and basic understanding of nursing concepts.
- Total Questions: 100
- Total Marks: 100
- Time Duration: 90 minutes
- Negative Marking: 1/3 mark deducted for each wrong answer
- Total Sections: 5
- Questions per Section: 20
- Time per Section: 18 minutes
Each question carries one mark, and the paper is divided into time-bound sections, so you must manage your time carefully.
Section-wise Distribution in Prelims
Non-Nursing Section (20 Questions)
This section includes:
- General Knowledge
- Current Affairs
- Reasoning
- Numerical Ability
This section carries around 20 percent weightage. Questions may come from recent events such as elections, sports, or national issues. Basic aptitude like percentages, time and distance, and calculations is also important.

Nursing Subjects (80 Questions)
This is the most important part of the exam. Questions are usually:
- One line or short questions
- Concept-based
- Focused on clinical situations
These questions test your ability to manage patients and handle real-life nursing situations.
NORCET Mains Exam Pattern
Students who clear prelims appear for the mains exam.
- Total Questions: 160
- Total Time: 160 minutes
- Total Sections: 4
- Questions per Section: 40
- Negative Marking: 1/3 mark
In the mains exam, questions are mixed. There is no fixed subject-wise section, and questions from different subjects are combined.
Subject-wise Weightage (Previous Pattern)
Earlier, the exam pattern was more focused on certain subjects:
- Medical Surgical Nursing: Around 30 questions
- Obstetrics and Gynecology: 8 to 10 questions
- Pediatrics: 4 to 6 questions
- Community Health Nursing: 6 to 8 questions
- Psychiatry Nursing: Around 8 questions
- Emergency and OT: 6 to 8 questions
- Other subjects (Nutrition, Management): 4 to 5 questions
Most students used to focus mainly on Medical Surgical Nursing because it had the highest weightage.
Latest Trend Based on 2024 Analysis
Norcet Syllabus -Recent exams have shown a major change in pattern. Instead of focusing heavily on one subject, the paper is now more balanced.
In some cases, entire sections were asked from a single subject.
Expected distribution based on recent analysis:
- Psychiatry Nursing: 15 to 18 questions
- Obstetrics and Gynecology: 15 to 18 questions
- Pediatrics: 15 to 18 questions
- Fundamentals, ICU, Emergency: Around 10 questions
- Community Health Nursing: Around 10 questions
- Medical Surgical Nursing: Around 10 questions
This clearly shows that no subject can be ignored.
Important Points to Understand
The earlier strategy was to give maximum time to Medical Surgical Nursing. However, the current trend shows that equal importance should be given to all subjects.
Subjects like Psychiatry, Pediatrics, and Obstetrics are now carrying high weightage and sometimes complete sections are asked from them.
Preparation Strategy for NORCET
Students should follow a balanced approach:
- Study all subjects equally
- Focus more on high-weightage subjects like Psychiatry, Obstetrics, and Pediatrics
- Practice MCQs daily
- Revise regularly
- Do not depend only on one subject
Understanding concepts is very important because questions are now application-based.
Why Negative Marking is Important
Negative marking is included to test your accuracy. As a future nursing officer, you will be responsible for patient care. Therefore, only correct and confident decisions are expected.
Avoid guessing answers blindly and attempt only those questions where you are sure.
